The Story Of My Small Business

Hi there! I’m Jen. When I found out I was pregnant with twin girls in the summer of 2013, I was excited decorate their nursery. I have always loved sports, and I envisioned a pink and white sports themed nursery with “Little Slugger”, “Future All-Star”, and all the other phrases you usually find on sports décor meant for little boys’ rooms.

But as I scoured the stores and made my registry list, I quickly realized the disappointing truth: I could have a pink nursery. I could have a sports-themed nursery. But I definitely couldn’t have a pink sports-themed nursery. At the time, those products simply didn’t exist.

I was frustrated and dismayed. Why wasn’t there any decor with strong, smart, or powerful themes that were also pink? That experience planted the first seeds of a business idea. But with twins on the way, I shrugged it off and dove into the busyness of new motherhood.

But the idea didn’t stay dormant forever. Three years later my daughters developed an intense interest in dinosaurs. And wouldn’t you know it, they wanted a pink dinosaur birthday party. After scouring the internet for hours, the only pink dinosaur invitations I could find were cartoons wearing tutus and tiaras - not quite the empowering image I had imagined.

So rather than continue to search for what didn't exist, I decided to create it myself. I designed a pink watercolor Brontosaurus (or long neck, as my girls called it), added some confetti and at least 4 different fonts (I hadn't yet learned the art of subtlety), and had it printed at an office supply store.

The end result makes me cringe a little now, but it also makes me smile. It may not be my best work, but it was the spark I needed to keep designing things that my daughters - and other little girls with diverse interests - would love.

I began stealing every spare moment to improve my illustration skills and learn graphic design. Thanks to a plethora of online tutorials and a lot of trial and error, I started Flip The Script six months after I created those first invitations.

Today, we have a full collection of dinosaur art prints as well as other unique themes like science, space, and travel. Each design incorporates an empowering image and/or text meant to inspire all girls to reach for their dreams. And yes, I did finally make my own dream come true by designing a collection of pink sports decor.
